FAQ

Q: What are the best laps for faceting?
(medium) - I like and recommend that most people use a 600 lap. I use it mostly for cutting Quartz and Beryl (to be honest), and then use a 1200 Nu Bond composite lap for a pre-polish. On other materials (like Tourmaline and Garnets) I generally go right to my worn 1200 steel lap, skipping the 600 lap. 1200 Diamond.
Q: What is the best diamond facet?
By far the most popular cut is the Round Brilliant, with it's fifty-seven perfectly aligned facets it's brilliance really does out-shine the others. Total internal reflection is the key here; light travels through the stone giving optimum sparkle and scintillation.
Q: Is faceting gems hard?
There are several steps to put 57 facets on a gem, but none of them are difficult. Cutting your first round brilliant is really the hardest step, since you have to learn all the new controls and procedures. At first, you'll need six to eight hours. With practice, you'll only need an hour or two.
Q: Is an extra facet on a diamond bad?
Sometimes, an extra facet or a misshapen facet is purposely introduced to remove an inclusion and to improve the diamond's clarity grade. This is a calculated move as the symmetry flaw doesn't impact value as much as the improvement in clarity grade does.
